01 What is volumetric weight?

Volumetric weight is also known as throwaway weight.

Because of the limited volume and space of lorries, planes and ships, some cargoes are too large and occupy a lot of space and compartments, so it is difficult to reflect the real transport cost of the cargoes with the weight weighed by scales alone.

Therefore, no matter domestic or international transport, the concept of volumetric weight has been introduced, through the length, width, height and volume coefficient of the goods, the volume will be converted into weight, that is, volumetric weight; the weight weighed on the scale is called the weight on the scale or the actual weight.

The weight on the scale is less than the volume weight of the goods is called throwaway. The volumetric weight (throwaway weight) is used as the billing weight for throwaway goods.

02 How is volumetric weight calculated?

The calculation of volumetric weight is actually very simple - the length * width * height of the parcel (cm) / volumetric weight coefficient (throw ratio)

Key point: the length, width and height here is not the length measured along the seams of the 6 sides of the carton, but the maximum length of the parcel in the three directions of length, width and height.

For some irregularly shaped parcels, it may be easier for you to understand; and for some parcels packed in standard cartons, sometimes the length, width and height will exceed the official dimensions of the carton, why is that?

This is because sometimes the parcel will be overfilled so that it protrudes in a certain direction, so the measured length, width and height will be larger than the official dimensions of the carton.

The formula for calculating the volume weight applied by Pole Cargo is one of the commonly used formulas in the industry: Volume weight (kg) = Length*Width*Height of the parcel (cm)/5000

03How to estimate the volume weight of my parcel?

It is usually difficult to estimate the volumetric weight in advance if you do not pack the parcel yourself or know exactly the size of the carton used.

Extreme Shipping measures the length, width and height of each incoming parcel, which users can view through Member Centre > Parcels in Warehouse.

When the user fills in the international waybill and ships out of the warehouse, Pole Cargo will measure again according to the unpacking and combining of parcels.
